the latest renovation projects

Here are some shots of our latest renovation projects:

I’ve been working on what we call “de-popcorning” and re-texturing the ceilings.  Due to popular trends in the late 1960’s, most houses in our area have this lovely popcorn-looking texture on the ceilings.  Although it could be worse, Russell despises it and has therefore peer pressured me into scraping it off of every square inch of ceiling in our entire house.  The tedious process includes spraying the ceiling with water, letting it sit for ten minutes, and then taking a small metal utility knife and scraping it off.  Some sections come off relatively easily while other sections add tension to our marriage due to the aforementioned reason for having to do such a job.  Nonetheless, after all “popcorn” has been successfully scraped away, I use a watered down dry-wall mud mixture and apply it to the ceiling in such a way that it gives off a subtle impression of stucco.  (see above picture)  One coat of primer and two coats of ceiling white paint later, the process is complete.  Would I prefer perfectly flat ceilings?  Most definitely…  but I am learning that sometimes you just have to make do with what you have!

My friend, Leah, and I tackled the job of prying off the ceiling beams in the den… which we realized were purely aesthetical (in the opinion of some) and not functional in the least.  By removing the beams, the room is feeling more spacious already.

Finally, the demo of the master bath is well underway!  After many days of de-constructing, our re-construction phase has begun.  First, Russell maximized the area of the room by pushing (aka knocking down and re-building) one wall back.  Second, he re-wired all of the electrical wires and installed a new ventilation fan!  Then, the dry-wall process began which included measuring, cutting, hauling, screwing in, mudding, sanding, and more!  After the walls look the way we want them, we will start the painting, install a new vanity, countertop and sink bowl, tile the floor and the shower, install new hardware and replace the toilet.

Sounds like a lot, right?  Well, you would do the same if your bathroom used to look like this:

Here are some pictures of the remodeling process:

  1. Host, I’m sorry you’re feeling peer pressured by Russell!

I do not understand why these are the “possibly related posts” esp. Kate Winslet:

    Possibly related posts: (automatically generated)

Urban development company breaths new life in Mississippi
    Openings for Project Manager
Kate Winslet bares all in Vanity Fair

  2. Josie-
You didn’t know that Kate Winslet is Russell’s cousin??

Well, neither did they. In fact, I have no idea why that would be a possibly related post except for the crazy idea that maybe I used the word “All” in one of my posts.

    Miss you, host!
